The map shows a population cartogram where each country is resized to its total population in 2013 (approximately 7.1 billion). The data for the population development covering the years from 1950 to 2100 were derived from the United Nations World Population Prospects (2012 Revision, http://esa.un.org/wpp/). The future estimates show the ‘medium variant’ (the middle of a range of estimated populations) from the report, resulting in a total global population of 10 billion in the year 2100.
